Working girl, cooking girl

Iza Calzado whips up a storm with new projects.

Mixed emotions. GMA 7 ACTRESS IZA Calzado is feeling a bit torn these days.

She’s sad because her afternoon soap, “Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit,” wraps up next month. At the same time, she’s excited about two new projects: Jose Javier Reyes’ “Working Girls 2010” on the big screen, and the cooking show “Healthy Cravings” on QTV.

“Most of all, I’ll miss the cast and crew of ‘Kaya Kong Abutin.’ It was such a beautiful bonding experience for all of us,” she said.

As for her character Clarissa, a non-conventional bida-contrabida, she’s a tad conflicted as well.

“She went through lots of ups and downs,” she said.

She admitted that she could never sympathize with someone like Clarissa, who “used people just to get ahead in life.”

Clarissa’s journey, however, offered a slew of lessons and was a gift for her as an actress because “it’s not the usual sweet martyr role. She’s complex, very interesting and never boring.”

Now that she’s free from the daily grind of a TV soap, she can focus on a movie and her first assignment for 2010 is a “dream come true,” she said.

“It’s my first time to work with Direk Joey Reyes and I’ve always wanted to be directed by him,” she said. “I follow him on Twitter and told him that I’m looking forward to our time on the set together.”

“Working Girls” is also her reunion with Unitel and Viva, co-producers with GMA Films of the updated version of the Ishmael Bernal classic.

Another project that got Iza all revved up is “Healthy Cravings,” which she co-hosts with chef Jeremy Favia, formerly of the cooking show “Ka-Toque.”

“It’s all about eating healthy. It’s for everyone who made a resolution to be fit this year,” she said.

To prepare, she has started spending more time in the kitchen, experimenting with various recipes.

She explained; “We came up with a fresh twist on traditional dishes like sinigang—with new ingredients or a new way of presenting them. Most of the recipes on the show are vegetable-based.”

Fortunately, Iza loves seafood and veggies. “I used to be a pesco-vegetarian, but started eating chicken again recently because the buffalo wings in my boyfriend Atticus King’s restaurant, NYPD, is delicious.”

They are both health buffs, but Iza said “we indulge once a week, as a special treat.”

Another QTV show is in the works, but Iza is not yet at liberty to go into details. She also declined to comment on the planned revival of her old fantaserye “Encantadia.” (She currently acts as council member on the reality talent search “Starstruck.”)

One sure thing is her participation in the “Ang Panday” sequel—especially after lead star Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. said she’d definitely be on board.

“She’s our lucky charm,” he said.

Yasmien Kurdi: In a house full of her personality

Yasmien Kurdi: In a house full of her personality

Yasmien, who was raised in the Middle East, can read, write, and speak several languages-Hindi, French, Arabic, English, and, of course, Filipino.     “Pag kasama ko si Mama sa bahay, Tagalog. Si Papa, Arabic. Pag nag-usap kami together tatlo, English. Noong bata ako, mas fluent ako sa French.”   Mom Miriam, who met Yasmien’s dad when he came to the Philippines in the 1980s to study, recalls how her daughter sometimes got into fights because of incidents of racial discrimination when they were still living abroad: “Minsan, nakipag-away ‘yan sa Kuwait. Hindi mo kasi matanggal ‘yong discrimination. Kasi alam nila, pag Filipina—maid. Naku, nambabato ‘yan. ‘Yong shoes niya, ‘binabalibag niya.”   (YES! October 2008 issue)

Yasmien Kurdi can sure talk before the shoot, she’s telling YES! that she’s getting a bit frantic because her pet dog, a two-year-old shih tzu named Charming, has been showing signs of dog dengue.
“Si Charming kasi, naka-confine ngayon,” says the young actress-singer. “Kaninang madaling araw, sinugod namin siya sa hospital.”

Hardly pausing for breath, she turns to her mom, Miriam and asks, “Ma, kamusta na ba daw si Charming? Tawagan natin ‘yong doctor.”
After Yasmien is assured that Charming—named after her popular character in the 2006 GMA-7 drama series Bakekang—is doing fine at the vet (she updates: “Nagwa-wag na raw siya ng tail!”), she’s back to her candid self, brimming with stories from her life in Kuwait to her future plans.

“Chopsuey ako,” Yasmien proudly says of her lineage. She was born in the Philippines in 1989 to a Lebanese father, Mike Kurdi, and a half-Filipina, half-Chinese mother, Miriam Yuson.

When Yasmien was one year old, the family moved to Kuwait, where her dad was based. But because of the ongoing Gulf War in the Middle East in the early ’90s, they traveled to her dad’s home country Lebanon, came back to the Philippines when she was three, and then returned to Kuwait when she was six.
“Masaya ang buhay doon, kasi hindi ka hirap,” she says of life in Kuwait. “Doon, kaagad may trabaho. Doon, in one week, puwede kang kumita ng malaking money. Hindi ko nga akalain, like, ‘yong baon ko in one day doon, parang mga 500 pesos pala dito. Parang naisip ko lang, kung kaya inipon ko ‘yong lahat, di ba?”
Growing up in the Middle East, Yasmien says, made her a tough cookie, but the toughness she got from her Kuwaiti upbringing has often been misinterpreted by Pinoys. She was 12 when she returned to the Philippines with her mom.
“Na-culture-shock ako dito! Kasi, kami doon, competitive kami. I mean, hindi kami ‘yong lalamya-lamya. Gusto ng Pinoy, underdog. Doon, hindi. Ayaw ka ng tao pag underdog ka. Kailangan strong ka, kailangan competitive ka. So nanibago ‘ko dito. Feeling ng tao, ang yabang ko. Feeling ng tao, ang angas ko, maarte. Pero di nila alam, ‘yon ang kinalakihan ko. So nag-adjust ako sa ways dito.”
She adds, laughing: “Dati, mas madaldal pa ‘ko, e. Ngayon, na-lessen na ‘to, actually.”
Since she was young, Yasmien knew she was bound for showbiz. In her former schools abroad, she would join different contests, including singing competitions and spelling bees. As a part of the Kuwait Filipino Cultural Club, she had the chance to perform in front of Kuwaiti royalty. So when she came back home, it wasn’t long before she joined the Pond’s Facial Ms. Soft Skin Search. She didn’t win that one, but she became a Pond’s print model afterwards.
In 2003, she secretly auditioned for GMA-7’s teen talent search, StarStruck.

“Ayaw nina Mama at Papa na mag-artista ako. E, makulit ako. Sinamahan ko ‘yong kaklase ko. Nag-cutting-classes kami.”

She laughs at the memory. “May dala kaming damit, ‘tapos ‘yong minus one. ‘Yong lipstick, ginawa kong blush-on. Sobrang bilis lang talaga. Last day ng GMA audition at last contestant pa ‘ko. Ako ‘yong sa mga artista pag sinasabi nila na ‘Pusong bato na ‘ko, kasi wala na ‘kong nararamdaman sa ‘binabatong intriga.’ Pero alam mo, dumating ako sa point na ganoon. Like now, pag nangyayari ‘yon, kahit ano’ng nababasa ko about myself, kahit siraan na ‘ko, parang, ‘Bakit ba?’”
The most recent intriga about Yasmien has to do with her sexy photos splashed in the tabloids.
In an interview with GMA-7’s Showbiz Central on August 17, 2008, Yasmien clarified that the pictures, which showed her wearing a two-piece bikini, were taken last year in Zambales during the taping for her series Pasan Ko ang Daigdig. She had uploaded the photos on Facebook, the Internet social-networking site.
“Nakuha po ‘yon sa Facebook account ko,” she told Showbiz Central. “Pero naka-private-account po ‘yon, kaya hindi ko alam kung sino ang kumuha sa mga friends ko. Naku, hindi ko nga alam kung bakit nila ginagawang big deal ‘yon, e, sa cellphone lang naman ‘yon. At saka nasa beach ako. Alangan namang magpantalon ako or mag-abaya ako.”
(Abaya is a traditional Islamic dress. Yasmien’s dad is Muslim, but she herself is with the Iglesia ni Cristo.)
There are also rumors that Yasmien is planning to quit showbiz for good to pursue her studies. She has denied this in an interview with YES! Magazine’s Internet affiliate, PEP—(Philippine Entertainment Portal).
“Nag-aaral naman talaga ako, she told PEP. “Nagkataon lang na may mga kailangan akong tapusin na importanteng subjects na ang schedule niya M-W-F talaga, at dapat sundin dahil wala akong magagawa kung hindi ko matatapos.”
The rumors likely began when she informed reporters that she was asking permission from the network to free certain days of the week for her academic schedule. The 20-year-old Angelicum College student wants to take up international studies and plans to take up some subjects at the New Era University, then eventually shift to the University of the Philippines.
“Gusto kong magtrabaho sa embassy, kasi, sa lahi ko, makaka-relate ako, and I like traveling talaga,” she tells YES! “Proud na rin ako na parang nakakapundar at nakakapag-save ako for my future. Kasi may gusto pa ‘kong ibang field. Siyempre, hindi naman forever ang showbiz.”

Will ‘frenemies’ Iza and Sunshine work together again?

With the second season of “Encantadia” about to debut anytime now, the question in everybody’s mind is: Will Sunshine Dizon accept the chance to work with Iza Calzado this time?

Sunshine is all poised to return to the small screen via the GMA-7 fantasy series, where in the original “Encantadia,” she played one of the four “sangres” (keeper of the gems). She is Pirena (Fire), while Iza is Amihan (Air), Diana Zubiri is Danaya (Earth), and Karylle is Alena (Water).

Reports have it that the new season will have new “sanggres” in Carla Abellana, Rhian Ramos, Jackie Rice, and Jennylyn Mercado.

It isn’t clear what role Sunshine will be playing but Iza will reportedly essay the role of Ynang Reyna, originally played by Dawn Zulueta, for the 2010 version tentatively titled “Encantadia: The Second Saga.”

Sunshine and Iza’s professional feud reportedly started when they taped for “All About Eve.” Their on-screen rivalry has reportedly gone personal and from best friends, they have become bitter enemies.

In one report, Sunshine allegedly refused to share a dressing room with Iza during the taping for the birthday special of Dingdong Dantes, preferring to stay outside the whole time.

Allegedly, the spat stemmed from Sunshine’s unprofessional conduct on the set, marked by her tardiness. Iza was also reportedly hurt when she was told by a production staff to change her outfit one taping day because Sunshine was already wearing a dress of the same color.

This feud was aggravated when Sunshine did not greet Iza on her birthday in “Unang Hirit.” She was also conspicuously absent during the celebration. And to make their spat even more obvious, Sunshine did not even do the requisite VTR greeting for Iza during her “SOP” birthday celebration.

Sunshine denied it being intentional.

“I’m bad with dates. Even ‘yong birthday ng mommy ko, nasi-switch ko sa birthday ng kuya ko. But I’ve made sure na kasabay ng pagbati ni Kuya Lhar (Santiago) sa ‘Unang Hirit’ ay binati ko na rin siya,” Sunshine explained in one interview.

Sunshine also said that she greeted Iza when they shared the stage during Dingdong’s birthday special.

“Honestly, this is such a petty thing. Hindi na ito dapat pinalaki,” Sunshine said in almost sheer resignation.

In past interviews, when their friendship had not yet been strained, Iza and Sunshine displayed their love for each other. In the media huddle for “Impostora,” for example, both actresses had expressed their willingness to do a kissing scene with each other.

“Kaibigan ko siya and she’s the person I’m most comfortable with. Para maganda ang kalabasan ng eksena, kailangang kumportable ka sa taong makakahalikan mo,” Iza had said.

“Oo naman, si Calzado pa? Why not, walang malisya ‘yon at gagawin namin dahil trabaho. Hindi ko lang siya kaibigan, kapatid pa,” Sunshine had also once enthused.

Only recently, Sunshine was tapped to be the judge in “StarStruck V” but was replaced by Iza when the former begged off for health reasons.

She reiterated that she’s just working on being more fit this year.

stars“I have several goals this year–sa career, [finance], health, meron pang iba. Ang dami kong goals. Tapos I want to take up dancing classes again kasi last year hindi ako gaanong nakapag-dance class. Mahilig talaga kong sumayaw so feeling ko naiwan ‘yung part ng buhay ko na ‘yun. And I want to be more fit with the help of Marie France (a company she endorses) and being active.”

Isa ba sa mga reasons why she wants to be fit ang kanyang boyfriend na si Atticus King? Na-conscious ba siya or na-pressure na maging fit dahil dito?

“Actually di ako nako-conscious. It’s more like I’ve always wanted to become more fit and healthier. Sakto lang I found perfect partner siguro in trying to get or get closer to that goal. Minsan lang kumakawala kami tapos nagpi-pig out pero we wish we could be more focused sa goal namin,” ang natatawang kuwento ng aktres.

And indeed, Iza Calzadoseems to be slowly but surely getting what she wants for 2010. At the moment may naka-line up na soap after Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit and meron din siyang sisimulang cooking show sa QTV Channel 11.

“This is the only cooking show on QTV that will be targeted for healthy vegetable dishes, basta healthy stuff. It’s healthy cooking that’s why it’s called Healthy Cravings.”

Of course, in-announce din ni Sen. Bong Revilla Jr. that Iza will surely be included in the sequel of Ang Panday sa susunod na Metro Manila Film Festival. Truly, 2010 has much in store for this talented and pretty Kapuso actress.
